Airport Baggage Handling Systems
Airport Baggage Handling Systems
SINGAPORE
CHANGI AIRPORT
CHANGI AIRPORT
BEUMER Group supports
the highly specialised baggage handling system at Singapore Changi Airport -
one of the most progressive airports in the world.
A major aviation hub
in Southeast Asia, Changi is recognised as one of the most advanced and
passenger-friendly airports in the world. The baggage handling system is
designed and integrated by BEUMER Group, who has a residential service contract
for the operation and maintenance of the baggage systems at Singapore Changi
Airport Terminals 2 and 3. BEUMER Group is solely responsible for ensuring
optimal operation and maintenance and the long-term capabilities of the baggage
handling systems.
In
Terminal 3, the system in use comprises two Crisplant S-3000E tilt-tray sorters
with 44 make-up chutes and one 10,000 metre, inter-terminal CrisBag® baggage transfer
system, the latter of which provides high-speed connection between terminals as
well as the early baggage storage system with 100% track and trace. The
contract also covers SCADA control systems and the installation of check-in
conveyors, racetracks and claim carousels, including 14 locally manufactured
baggage carousels.
In Terminal 2, the
system in use comprises two tilt-tray baggage sorting machines, automatic
inductions and automatic reading stations (for 10-digit IATA barcode labels).
16 inductions, belt conveyors and early baggage storage for 2,200 bags. 100%
automatic HBS (security screening) system with integration of both high-level
and low-level control into the baggage handling control system.
A team of 121 BEUMER
Group employees is deployed to operate and maintain the automated baggage
handling systems at the two terminals. They provide 24/7 operation at the
baggage control rooms and necessary preventive maintenance to ensure continuous
system availability and optimum performance. In the event of a system
interruption, fully redundant hardware will provide an automatic and immediate
seamless switch to backup systems

BHS MANAGEMENT
SYSTEMS
SYSTEMS
Software and controls
is of the essence for a successful integration of baggage sorting and
transportation equipment. Crisplant and BEUMER have in-house developed control
and management software including SAC and MICS/SCADA as well as baggage
reconciliation (BRS) that offers improved level of security and aids prevention
of short-shipped and misrouted bags.
For a high capacity
baggage handling system it is vital that the software managing and controlling
the baggage handling system successfully integrates all the sorting and
transportation equipment and provides an intuitive user interface. Crisplant
and BEUMER have many years of experience in achieving just that and use system
simulation and emulation to verify all software and hardware minimising valuable
project site time and costs.
The BHS management
software suite covers all aspects of baggage handling and is currently
controlling the baggage handling process in both major international hubs and
regional airports around the world.
SIMULATION
AND EMULATION
AND EMULATION
All projects from
BEUMER Group are submitted to multi-stage testing. System simulation and
emulation is used as part of these tests to verify the software and hardware
upon completion of the system design and software coding. Crisplant and BEUMER
have developed a SW tool to generate emulation from the project specific 3D
AutoCAD drawings of the baggage handling system.
Emulation links the actual
hardware and the controls software to a computer model running the actions and
initiating the I/Os and telegram flow in real time. This process ensures that
the upper and low level software is fully tested before shipment to the airport
site. Using emulation to test the system early in the project minimises
valuable project site time and reduces costsAirport Baggage Handling Systems

BAGGAGE
UNLOADER
The
Baggage Unloader has been developed to transfer bags from a container onto a
conveying line in the airport. It allows operators to slide bags onto the
conveyor rather than lifting them. This inherently gentle handling technique
means that the risks of operator injury, and damage to baggage, are reduced,
and ULDs are unloaded faster and more efficiently.
Simply
by moving the Baggage Unloader into position in front of the container and
extending the ramp to each stack of bags, the operator bridges the gap between
the conveyor and the container and thereby reduces the ergonomic risks to
operators’ backs, shoulders, etc.
The
complete Baggage Unloader system can be easily integrated into existing systems
to optimise the efficiency of the unloading process in the airport. Designed to
operate within a very compact working area, the Baggage Unloader is highly
space-efficient and, as a fully manual handling aid, consumes no energy.
Features:
·
Fast and easy to operate
·
2.5 minutes unloading time per ULD
·
Suitable for all containers and vehicles
·
Allows operators to slide bags rather than lift them
·
Minimal training required

BAG
FORKLIFT
The Bag
Forklift has been developed to reduce or eliminate manual lifting of
"out-of-gauge" (OOG) baggage to provide a safer working environment
for operators and minimise the risk of damage to OOG baggage.
Baggage
which is over the size and weight limits typically has to be manually
transferred between the container and the departure or arrival system. This
process places operators at a higher risk of injury and also increases the risk
of damage to the baggage. The Bag Forklift is a highly efficient OOG baggage
loading and unloading system, which enables airports to provide a safer working
environment within these operations.
The Bag
Forklift is easily integrated into existing systems and can therefore be used
to enhance the efficiency of virtually any baggage handling system.
Features:
·
Highly efficient loading/unloading system
·
Safe handling of out-of-gauge (OOG) baggage
·
Easy operation by one person
·
Handles an average of approx. 70 bags/hour
·
Compatible with a wide range of containers and vehicles

BAGGAGE
LIFTING TABLE
The
Baggage Lifting Table has been developed to eliminate the manual lifting of
bags over the safety end stop at the end of baggage chutes in the airport. It
delivers bags to the operator at an ergonomic working height.
As a
bag arrives from the chute, the operator presses a pushbutton to lower the
table. The bag slides onto the table, and another press of the pushbutton
raises it again to an ergonomic working height. The next bags are held back on
the chute by the safety end stop, which follows the table up and down. The
operator is now able to pull the bag onto a baggage loader.
The
heavy manual lifting of bags is replaced with a gentle sliding action, which
minimises the risk of injury to the operator and reduces the risk of damage to
baggage. The Baggage Lifting Table can also be used in conjunction with the
Crisplant Baggage Loader to allow operators to safely transfer bags in the
airport from chutes and into a ULD or other container.
Features:
·
Eliminates the need to lift bags over chute safety stops
·
Adjustable table height using simple pushbutton control
·
Easily operated by one person
·
Suitable for all chute ends

AUTOMATED
CONTAINER UNLOADER
The
Automated Container Unloader is a fully automated system for unloading bags in
the airport from ULDs with minimal operator intervention.
The
Automated Container Unloader is developed to virtually eliminate manual
handling of baggage out of the ULD. It is capable of increasing the efficiency,
throughput and security of the baggage handling process in the airport, in
addition to minimising manpower and cost.
The
risk of baggage being lost or misplaced through human error is significantly
reduced, as the Automated Container Unloader requires a much smaller team of
operators compared to manual unloading. This improves the incident rate (IR)
and the quality of the baggage handling system, in addition to increasing
airport security by minimising human contact with the bags.

AUTOMATED CONTAINER
HANDLING SYSTEM
The
Automated Container Handling System transports loaded ULDs between destinations
in the airport. Additionally, it diverts empty ULDs for parking or maintenance
with no manual lifting and minimal operator intervention.
The
system is configured as a single isolated loop or as a number of interconnected
loops over multiple building levels. Furthermore, the system is controlled by
management software which communicates wirelessly, and in real time, with each
ULD carrier. The destination, position and progress of each carrier are
constantly tracked to provide 100 % traceability of each ULD.
Automating
the container handling process provides enhanced quality by reducing the
incident rate (IR) and increases productivity and process reliability. Airport
security is also increased by reducing the number of times that the bags are
handled manually.

The
Baggage Loader has been developed to reduce manual lifting of in-gauge bags in
the make-up area in the airport. The Baggage Loader significantly increases
workplace safety for baggage handling staff and provides safe and efficient
loading and unloading of bags into ULDs, containers, etc.
The
baggage is typically lifted from the conveyor and thrown into the ULD with
conventional manual handling techniques. The Baggage Loader, however, virtually
eliminates heavy lifting to minimise manual handling risks. The gentle sliding
action of the Baggage Loader also minimises the risk of damage to baggage.
The
Baggage Loader is easily integrated into existing systems and can significantly
improve the efficiency and the quality of the baggage handling process in the
airport.

BAGGAGE
MANIPULATOR
The
Baggage Manipulator is a highly efficient semi-automated loading device
developed to enable the introduction of ‘lean principles’ and improved
ergonomics within the baggage handling process in the airport. It enables
cost-efficient, semi-automatic loading of baggage into ULDs, trolleys, carts or
other containers.
The
Baggage Manipulator minimises the risk of injury to operators caused by
repetitive or heavy lifting and also reduces the risk of damage to baggage
items. Reduced manual handling also increases overall security and reduces the
risk of human error.
A
single operator can control the flow of each batch of baggage items into the
container by moving the ramp to deliver each item to the next loading position
using a simple joystick. The Baggage Manipulator easily integrates into
existing systems, and it can enable shorter time frames for loading which allow
the baggage operators to handle a higher number of items quickly and reliably.
Features:
